Council of Europe Adopts a Gender Budgeting Resolution Inspired by WSF Discussions, 30 January 2025
On 30 January 2025, the Council of Europe adopted a resolution on gender budgeting, advancing efforts to integrate gender equality into economic policy. The motion was proposed by Sena Nur Çelik Kanat, a Turkish parliamentarian and member of the Women for a Sustainable Future (WSF) network. It was inspired by discussions on gender budgeting at the WSF network’s meeting in Helsinki in June 2022, and Sena Nur submitted it to the Council of Europe just two weeks later.
The resolution calls for gender-responsive budgeting at all stages of national budget planning, with accountability mechanisms to tackle economic gender inequalities. It urges action to close the gender pay gap, improve women’s career progression, and increase female workforce participation.
